1.  Purpose

Each KCTCS college will maintain a behavioral intervention team (BIT) to provide thoughtful, caring, preventive early intervention with students and employees whose behavior is disruptive or concerning.  Particularly, the BIT will work to promote student academic success and safety through appropriate and timely response.

2.  Scope

2.1 This Policy applies to all KCTCS students, employees, and volunteers, regardless of whether the conduct is engaged in by students, employees, or volunteers.

2.2  This Policy does not apply to noncredit training activities conducted at employer facilities.

3.  Policy

The BIT Team is a resource for faculty, staff and students to report student or employee behaviors of concern. Examples include but are not limited to:

  • behavior which appears to be dangerous or threatening to oneself or others;
  • troubling, angry, hostile, or abusive behavior; or
  • other behavior that is inappropriate or disruptive.

The BIT is not a disciplinary body but serves as a tool for maintaining a safe environment at the college.  The BIT will develop specific strategies for assessing and proactively managing potentially harmful or disruptive behavior while considering the safety and rights of others and minimizing disruption to the college community.  Concerns with college personnel will be addressed under the direction of the College’s Office of Human Resources.

Colleges may choose the structure that works best for them, as long as they are at least performing the functions of a BIT as described above.

4.  Procedure

Procedure 3.3.27-P implements this policy.
